Margaret Clay Davis

August 10, 1936 — November 17, 2022

Pelahatchie, MS

Margaret Clay Overby Davis died peacefully in her home on November 17, 2022 surrounded by her loving family.  At the age of 86, she in faith entered the Pearly Gates of Heaven.  Visitation will be held at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS on Sunday, November 20th from 3-5pm.  On Monday November 21st visitation will also be held from 1-2 pm at Pelahatchie Baptist Church.  A Celebration of Life will be at 2pm following the visitation.

Margaret Clay was born on August 10, 1936 in Panola County MS.  Margaret Clay grew up in Brandon, MS and graduated from Brandon High School in 1954.  Shortly after graduation, she married Moody Davis and moved to Pelahatchie.  Margaret Clay loved being part of the Davis family and enjoyed her life in Pelahatchie.

Margaret Clay was an active member of Pelahatchie Baptist Church for over 68 years.  She loved singing in the choir, teaching the Bible, and regularly participating in all of their mission programs. In recent years, her favorite church activity was the Explorers Bible Study program. Margaret Clay loved reading and studying her Bible which was apparent in how she encouraged others by sharing her Christian faith.

Other than her Christian faith, Margaret Clay valued her family the most.  Her ministry to them was as a mentor and a caregiver as she sacrificially gave her time, energy, love, and other resources without hesitation. Her influence will be seen for generations to come and is already evident in the lives of her family.

Margaret Clay and her husband Moody joined with many others in the Pelahatchie community to form East Rankin Academy in 1969. Through their work, many of her closest friendships were formed with the people she met during that time.

Margaret Clay became a widow at the age of 42. Following his passing, she finished her college education at Belhaven College to help support her family and work with others to manage the family businesses.

Margaret Clay’s love of life translated to a enjoyment of teaching, learning, gardening, traveling, forming friendships, square dancing, and knitting. Sharing these passions with treasured friends greatly enriched her life. She was a light to all who met her.

Margaret Clay’s life was not without its challenges, but with her strong faith in Jesus Christ, her hard work, and selfless actions she was able to overcome all of these difficulties with a great testimony of God’s provision in her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Moody Davis, her parents Clay and Margaret Overby, and her in-laws Lynn and Irma Lee Davis.

Margaret Clay is survived by her children, Dorman Davis, Margaret White(Andy), Virginia Lynn Shoultz(John), six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, brother John Lee Overby(Wanda), two sisters Minada Johnston(Jerry), Frances Pearson (Dave), and numerous cousins and other relatives.

The family would like to extend gratitude to Mary Burnham, Ashley Yarrington, Sheliah Hood, Theresa Pigg, April Bridges with Baptist Hospice, and Dr. Kimberly Tarver for their loving care of Margaret Clay.
