Virginia Malone Swales, 82, died Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital in Brandon. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm Monday, April 12, 2010 at Lakewood Memorial Park in Jackson.

Mrs. Swales was a native of Leake County and moved to the Reservoir Community in 1995 after previously living in Kosciusko and Jackson. She attended school in Edinburg and married Cecil (Slim) Swales on December 27, 1941, who preceded her in death in 1993. Her parents, Wash and Esther Malone; son, Cecil Paul Swales; grandson Jeff Peterson and brother Kenneth Malone also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Swales was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and was currently a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Brandon. She had been a past choir member, Sunday school teacher, involved in Lay Witness Missions and had been a wedding director. Mrs. Swales always had a lifelong interest in sports, especially basketball. She had a keen mathematical mind, which led her to many bookkeeping opportunities. Mrs. Swales was a wonderful “country” cook and it was a special delight for her to make deserts for the Reservoir Fire Department. She was also a talented seamstress, having crocheted many afghans for friends, family and strangers. Mrs. Swales had a gifted green thumb and just simply liked to make the world a more beautiful place. She enjoyed canning and “putting up” vegetables from her garden and also fishing and going to craft shows.

Survivors include her son, Larry (Linda) Swales of Brandon; daughter, Barbara Ann (Pete) Peterson of Pickensville, Alabama; brothers, Bob Malone of Madison, W. C. Malone of Georgia and Wendell Malone of Ohio; grandchildren, Mary (Kyle) Grant, Josh (Amy) Swales, Megan Craig, Paul Swales, Jr. and Paula Swales; great grandchildren, Carson, Garrett, Jackson, Aiden, Jake, Baker, Ashley, Angela, Micah, Justin, and a number of nieces and nephews.
