 O.F. “Peat” Arney, 91, passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the Veterans Hospital in Jackson, MS. Visitation will be at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 11:00am.  Memorial service following at Noon in the chapel.  Burial will follow at 4:00pm with graveside services at Craig Springs Cemetery in Oktibbeha County.

 Peat was born on October 17, 1932, in Texas to Henry and Viola (Scarbrough) Arney.  He spent his youth growing up in the Oktibbeha County area of MS.  He joined the US Army SCARWAF Division in 1951 during the Korean Conflict.  After completion of service in the Army he moved to St. Louis, MO where he worked at Joy Manufacturing Company and met his future wife, Margaret Johnston.  Peat and Margaret married in 1953 and moved to Mississippi where they spent the next 53 years raising their 4 children and welcoming grandchildren and great grandchildren to the family before the passing of Margaret in 2006.  Peat honed his skills as a butcher during his 38 years working at Swift Meat Packing Company.   He knew good steaks and was a connoisseur of good food.  He spent many days fishing the waters of the Ross Barnett Reservoir enjoying one of his favorite pastimes.  His other pastimes included spending time in the woods hunting, and tending his garden.   Peat most enjoyed spending time with family and friends telling stories of fishing, hunting and bygone days.  

 Survivors include his sons, Keith Masters (D’Arcy) and Franklin Arney (Sandy); daughter, Kathy Hayes (Ralph); former daughter-in-law, Paula Sims; sisters, Faye Pearson and Mary Fortenberry; brother, Charles Arney (Shirley); sister-in-law Sarah Arney; eight grandchildren, Bryan Masters (Darla), Ken Masters, Rachel Masters, Landon Shows, Thomas Arney (Melissa), Stephanie Arney, Jeremy Hayes (Christi), and Adam Hayes (Margaret); twenty-one great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Viola Arney; wife Margaret Johnston Arney; son, Michael Arney; sisters, Mavis Allen (Frank) and Shirley Hunt; and brothers, Marvin Arney (Bobbie), Joe Arney, and Claude Arney.  Brother-in-laws Felix Pearson and Herman Fortenberry.
