Owanie Y. Thompson, a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on August 16, 1937, Owanie leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion that will forever be remembered by all who knew her.
Owanie was a woman deeply rooted in her passions, finding joy in her hobbies which included tending to her beloved flowers, nurturing her garden, and immersing herself in the beautiful sounds of gospel music. She took great delight in the company of her family, who were her pride and joy.
She is survived by three daughters: Kelly White, and her husband Bobby Jack; Kathy Garcia, and her husband David; and Melissa Applewhite, and her husband Robert. Owanie also leaves a remarkable legacy through her seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom enriched her life with their presence.
Owanie's familial bonds extended beyond her immediate family. She is also survived by her two brothers, Sammy Ladd, and his wife, Helen, and Billy Joe Ladd, and his wife Barbara, who provided her with support and companionship throughout her life.
Owanie is reunited in spirit with her beloved husband, Arnold B. Thompson, who predeceased her. She is also preceded in death by her mother, Lena Coats; her son, Dewayne Thompson; her sister, Wautese Crapps; and her brother, G. B. Ladd. They shall hold a special place in her heart forever.
As we honor the memory of Owanie Y. Thompson, we reflect on the beautiful moments she gifted us and the warmth she spread to those around her. Her visitation will be held on June 20, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Ott & Lee Funeral Homes in Morton, MS. A funeral service celebrating her life will take place the following day, June 21, 2025, at 11:00 AM, also at Ott & Lee Funeral Homes. Owanie will then be laid to rest at Eureka Baptist Church in Lena, MS, following a burial service at 12:00 PM.
Owanie Y. Thompson will forever be remembered for her indomitable spirit, unwavering love for her family, and the memorable moments shaped by her kindness.
