Brandon

On Thursday, April 8, 2010, Mimi Hanna Martin died peacefully at home where she had remained with her husband, Marcus, and wonderful caregivers during her long illness. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 on Friday at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, and services will be on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Brandon Baptist Church with Dr. Bob Jackson and Dr. Clarence Cooper officiating.

Mimi Hanna was born in Meridian, Texas, August 31, 1935, as the third child of James Wylie Hanna and Mary Alice Jones Hanna . Her years in the family home were joyful ones that culminated with her graduation from Meridian High School, Meridian, Texas in 1953 as an honor student and homecoming queen. Following four years of undergraduate study at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Miss Hanna earned Bachelor of Science in elementary education in 1957. While at Baylor University, she was a member of the Athenian women’s club.

On December 27, 1957, Mimi Hanna wed Marcus Edmond Martin whom she had met while he was serving a tour of duty at Coneley Air Force Base in Waco, Texas. In the early years of their 52 year marriage, she taught in various schools in each of the locations in which Mr. Martin was stationed.

In January 1963 the couple moved to Brandon, Mississippi. Mrs. Martin continued the career she loved at various local schools, including Puckett Elementary School and McLaurin Elementary School . She was passionate about teaching and about her students, and during her tenure, she taught every elementary grade except first grade.

To the Martins were born two children, Sara Martin Fox and Marcus Edmond Martin, Jr. While Sara was still a toddler, Mrs. Martin ceased teaching school to be at home. She was very active in every aspect of the lives of her husband and her children, and for the entirety of their lives together she poured herself unconditionally and joyfully into them. She worked diligently in the schools and other activities in which her children participated, and to them she was a constant source of Godly guidance, encouragement and instruction. She was an excellent wife and a mother who earned the utmost honor and respect. It was in her passion for her family that her true spirit and character were most clearly reflected.

Mrs. Martin was very proud to be an American and diligently sought to instill that love of country into her own children as well as the children of the community. She was a founding member of the Gerard C. Brandon Society, Children of the American Revolution, in 1982 and worked diligently through that organization to educate and foster patriotism among the youth of Brandon. She also served as a charter member of Chief Red Jacket, DAR.

She was a believer in the gospel of Jesus Christ and was unwavering in her commitment to follow Christ and his commands. She worshiped most of her adult life at First Baptist Church of Brandon and later at First Baptist Church of Jackson and Brandon Baptist Church. She was a serious student of the Bible, and found great benefit in the inductive Bible studies in which she participated. Over the years, she served on many committees of her local congregations and taught many Sunday school classes for children.

Mrs. Martin was a perfectionist who loved great books, classical music and travel. She was thankful to have seen many of the countries of the world.

She will be remembered by all who knew her well as an extraordinary woman, full of grace and truth, who modeled true humility and a willingness to serve others throughout her life. In addition to her family, she tirelessly gave her talents, time and love to those who were so fortunate as to know her. Those who knew her best would agree that through her life she made others’ lives richer.

Mrs. Martin was predeceased by her parents and one brother, Jack Dudley Hanna.

Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband, Marcus Edmond Martin, one daughter, Sara Martin Fox, and her husband, Grant Moncrief Fox, one son, Marcus Edmond Martin, Jr. , and his wife, Shea Robinson Martin, and four precious grandchildren, John Martin Fox (8), Kate Lofton Martin (5), Marcus Edmond Martin, III (4), and Ann Peyton Martin (1). She is also survived by her much loved brother and sister, James Wylie Hanna, Jr. of Pineville, Louisiana, and Luann Hanna Hunt, of San Antonio, Texas, and many nieces and nephews .

Her final years were blessed greatly by the presence of many special friends, most specifically Pat and Bill Welch, and loving caregivers, Loretta Love, Robert Earl Fletcher and Bertha Williams.
