Mavis Perry Melton

Mavis Perry Melton, born September 12, 1944, in Edinburg, Mississippi, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 31, 2026, surrounded by her family at home. While her family mourns her passing, they rejoice in the comfort of her faith fulfilled.

Born to James and Earl Perry, Mavis lived a life defined by faith, love, and quiet strength. She worked faithfully for over twenty years at Bill’s Institutional Complex (later Sanderson Farms) in Flowood, where she was respected for her dedication and work ethic.

In January 2003, she married Arthur Melton, the love of her life. Together they shared joyful years in Missouri before returning to Pelahatchie, Mississippi, building a home centered on faith, laughter, and family. Affectionately known as “MeMe and Poptart,” they shared a special bond with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Mavis’s life was anchored in her relationship with the Lord. Her faith was lived daily through love, prayer, encouragement, and a listening heart. Her greatest joy was her family and watching each generation grow. She also loved Southern Gospel music, especially concerts by the Revelations Quartet, which reflected the hope she carried throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her grandsons, Christian Talley and James Harold “Jamey” Phillips.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur Melton; her brother, Don (Joyce) Perry; her children, Katrina (Clark) Phillips, Linda Talley, and Billy (Candice) Talley Jr.; and her bonus daughters, Jennifer Melton and Jana (Doug) Weller.

She was a beloved grandmother to Katie Walker, Tabitha (Harrison) Varner, Angel (Dustin) Reed, Brooke Cranfield, and Mack Talley; bonus grandmother to Michael (Karla) Summerford, Alex Summerford, and Samantha Neal; and great-grandmother to Dawson Taylor, Leighton Walker, Luna Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Varner, and Isaiah Bullock, as well as bonus great-grandchildren Claire Summerford, Grace Summerford, Kathleen Weller, and Chrissy Neal.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Tiffany Hutchins and her crew at Flowood Drug Company, and to Ashley Parker, Helen Gordon, Kelly Hartzog and the Gentiva Hospice team for their compassionate care.

Visitation will be 2-5pm Sunday, August 2, 2026 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, Mississippi. Funeral services will be officiated by Rev. John Vaughn at 11am Monday, August 3, 2026, in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will be 11am Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at Forest Hill Cemetery South in Memphis, Tennessee.

Mavis leaves a legacy of unwavering faith, deep love, and devotion to family. Though deeply missed, her family finds peace in the promise of reunion.
