Joan Prevost Fortune, 87, of Brandon, Mississippi passed away on January 19, 2023 in Flowood, Mississippi.
Joan was born in Panama City, Florida on February 28, 1935 to Percy and Mildred (Edwards) Prevost. In 1953, Joan married Dan E. Hoyle and they had two daughters, Suzanne Marie and Lisa Louise. After their marriage ended, she married Leon R. Fortune, a career Air Force officer, in 1957, and became a mother to Leon’s four children, Sharon, David, Diane and Donna. Leon’s later employment with US AID and the US State Department took the family overseas where they lived in Afghanistan for 4 years and in Nigeria for 12 years. Upon retirement Joan and Leon returned to Brandon, Mississippi where they built a home on Fortune-family land. After Leon’s passing, Joan returned to Panama City to live in her beloved “Cove” neighborhood where she had grown up. Joan’s passion was genealogy; she spent countless hours investigating and documenting her family roots.
She is survived by her brother Harry (wife Francis) Prevost, sister Anna Prevost, daughter Sharon Francis, daughter Donna (husband Richard) Young, three sons-in-law: Jim Bramstedt, Joe Clark, and Butch Harrison, 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, a niece and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leon, daughter Lisa, daughter Suzanne, daughter Diane, son David, and grandson Michael.
Her service at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, Mississippi will be streamed live at 3pm Wednesday January 25, 2023. It can be watched by clicking the link in her obituary at www.ottandlee.com. She will be buried next to her husband of 51 years at Andrew Chapel Cemetery in Brandon, Mississippi.
