Jimmy Carter

James “Jimmy” Roy Carter, 89, of Pelahatchie, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord on September 18, 2023. A visitation for family and friends will be held at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS on Thursday, September 21, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and on Friday, September 22, at Antioch Baptist Church in Brandon, MS from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, followed by a graveside service and meal served in the church fellowship hall.

Funeral services will be officiated by Bro. Larry Duncan, Bro. Gayden Harrell, and Bro. Donnie Stuart. Pallbearers will be grandsons Drew Carter, Josh Carter, Reed Carter, and Ben Carter, and nephews Stacy Stevens and Shane Carter. Honorary pallbearers will be Aaron Burns, Mark Huff, Chris Jones, Jason Jones, Todd McIntyre, Bill Allen, (Chief, WVFD), and members of the Walters Volunteer Fire Department. All arrangements will be handled by Ott and Lee Funeral Home.

Jimmy was born in the Antioch Community to Roy and Bettye Rae Carter on February 4, 1934.  He graduated Puckett High School in 1953. He then went on to play football for Hinds Community College, where he received an Associate’s degree in 1955. Jimmy married Helen Ruth Burgess on December 20, 1958. They were happily married for 62 years.

Jimmy was a devoted father to his three boys, James Douglas, Don Burgess, and Chris Patrick. He faithfully attended Antioch Baptist Church with his family, always ready and willing to contribute his time, efforts, and abilities wherever needed. He was a daily example of selflessness and humility, not just in the church, but throughout the entire community. Jimmy was best known for being a man of few words, quiet strength, and generosity.

Jimmy provided for his family as a farmer and was also an active member of the Walters Volunteer Fire Department. When the Walters’ alarm went off, everyone in the house knew to “clear a path” so he could gather his keys and radio and head out the door.

Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Bettye Rae Carter, his wife, Ruth Carter, and brother-in-law, Larry Smith. He is survived by his children, Doug (Wendy) Carter, Don (Penny) Carter, and Chris (Michelle) Carter, his grandchildren, Drew and Josh Carter, Reed and Ben Carter, Anna Grace and Leah Kathryn Carter, his sister, Patty Smith, of the County Line Community, his brother, Johnny (Jewel) Carter of Pelahatchie, a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and even great-great-nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Walters Volunteer Fire Department, 125 Walters Rd., Pelahatchie, MS 39145.
