James S. Stanley, Jr. age 88 died on August 10th, 2010 at 9:30 am in his home in Brandon, MS. Services will be held at Brandon First United Methodist Church at 11am on Friday, August 13, 2010 with burial to follow in Brandon Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Thursday at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon and 10 am Friday at Brandon First United Methodist Church.

Mr. Stanley, a Brandon native since 1946, was born in Pelahatchie Miss, on January 14, 1922 to James S. & Ora Holmes Stanley. He was a graduate of Pelahatchie High School and Jackson Commercial College. He worked for the Bell Telephone Company until 1942, when he was inducted into the army at Camp Shelby. From there he joined the 101st Paratrooper at Camp Blanding, FL then transferred to the 2d Bn., Hq. Co. 117th Inf. Reg. and on to England. From there he continued on to the Invasion of France to the Elbe River out of Berlin. During WWII he served in the European Theater, including the invasion of Normandy and campaigns in Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received 18 medals including 6 Battle Stars, a Good Conduct medal, a French Fourragere, a Belgium Fourragere, and a French Deploma.

After returning to the States, Mr. Stanley opened his business in Brandon, Stanley’s Family Food Store, located in Downtown Brandon, which he continued until 1969, after which he was employed with the Postal Service as a Rural Mail Carrier.

Mr. Stanley was active in the community, serving as President of the Lion’s Club, were he was instrumental in raising funds for the former Youth Center and the swimming pool that was located next to the former High School. He was a member of the DAV, VFW, member of the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, and was on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce.

Though retired, Mr. Stanley continued to remain active in Church and community affairs. He served as President of the Mississippi Chapter of the Veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, attended reunions of his 30th Infantry Division organization, and was a charter member of the Battle of Normandy Museum in Calen, France. He was also an active member of Brandon First United Methodist Church where he served as President of his Sunday School Class.

Mr. Stanley is preceded in death by his parents and his 2 younger brothers, Tommy Stanley and Billy Ray Stanley and former wife, Georgia Allen Stanley. Mr. Stanley is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Williamson Stanley of Brandon, and 2 daughters, Deena Moore (Steve) and Terri Zebert and their mother and his first wife, Voncile Comfort Wilson; 2 step-daughters, Kim Brake (Bill) and Chris Townsend (Ken); 2 step-sons , Richmond Alliston (Bennie Gayle) and Rusty Alliston (Betty). He is also survived by his 4 grandchildren, Renna Moore, Havilah Moore, Justin Zebert, and Kara Hankins (Taylor), his step-grandchildren, Courtney King, Reed Alliston, Samantha Alliston, Shelly Brake, Billy Brake, Nathan Phillips (Caroline), Mitchell Phillips, Gray Townsend, and Maggie Townsend, and his Great-grandchildren Andrew Westin Hankins, Gage Wilson, and A.J. King. He is also survived by his two sisters-in-law, Virginia Stanley, Billie Stanley, and several nieces and nephews.

As a member of the “Greatest Generation”, James Stanley inspired his friends and family with his life and accomplishments, and his absence will be greatly felt by his many loved ones.
