James Martin Baylot, resident of Brandon, Mississippi, took his first breath in Heaven on July 13, 2025 at 89 years old. James was born on June 28, 1936 to Fernand P. Baylot Sr. and Beulah P. Baylot of Vicksburg, MS. James served his country in the Army National Guard for 13 years, spent his professional life working in sales, and was a devoted Sunday school teacher at Pearl United Methodist Church for 25 years. James married his high school sweetheart, Mildred Moore Baylot, and they celebrated 68 years of union with one another. Together, they raised two children: Jamie Megginson Baylot and Kevin Martin Baylot. James was lovingly referred to as “Gramps” by his 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
James was our “Mr. Fix It.” He had a God-given curiosity and thirst for knowledge. He wanted to know how things worked and believed he could fix anything himself. In early years, he was known for checking books and manuals out of the local library, and in later years, scouring the internet, to teach himself how to fix this and that. James loved to capture family moments through film. He was always behind the camera documenting weddings, dance recitals, school programs, and even catching Santa Claus laying out presents one Christmas Eve for his grandchildren. James was a storyteller: both through his recordings and in daily life. Any visit with him came with comical tales of his childhood. James was also the friendliest neighbor. In his healthier years, he was known for taking daily strolls down his street that were more about socializing with the neighbors than the exercise.
James was preceded in death by his parents Fernand P. Baylot Sr. and Beulah P. Baylot, his brothers F. P. “Buddy” Baylot Jr. and Erwin Baylot.
James is succeeded in death by his brother, Lawrence Baylot, his wife of 68 years, Mildred Moore Baylot, his daughter, Jamie Baylot Megginson (Paul), his son, Kevin Martin Baylot (Terra), his grandchildren: Kelsey Megginson Treadwell (Cameron), Konnor Megginson, Kale Baylot (Flynn), Eden Baylot, Lauren Wiltshire (Josh), and Logan Moulder (Kayley), and his 5 great grandchildren: Collier Treadwell, Addison Wiltshire, Ally Wiltshire, Josie Moulder, and Rhett Moulder.
A celebration of James Baylot’s life will be held at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS on Wednesday starting at 12:00pm. A funeral service will follow at 2pm in the chapel. Interment will be at Crestview Memorial Gardens in Brandon, MS.
