H. Nelson Spencer

H. Nelson Spencer was born on November 26, 1938, in Port Gibson, Mississippi, to the late Jane Spencer and Horatio Nelson Spencer II.

On September 18, 1962, Nelson married Barbara. Together they shared 64 years of marriage and built a loving family. Nelson passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026.

After marrying, Nelson and Barbara moved to Jackson, Mississippi, where he worked alongside his brother, Newlin Spencer. Shortly thereafter, Nelson founded Spencer Construction, a company specializing in foundation work and residential home construction.

Nelson was a tremendous athlete and an avid golfer who especially enjoyed spending time on the course with family and friends. Throughout the years, he dedicated countless hours to coaching and supporting his daughters and grandchildren as they participated in a variety of sports. In retirement, he found great joy working outdoors and caring for his yard.

Nelson is survived by: His wife, Barbara Spencer of Brandon, Mississippi; his daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Scott Walters of Brandon, Mississippi; his daughter, Renee Chastain of Brandon, Mississippi; his brother, John Spencer of Indianola, Mississippi; his sister, Ruth Willis of Port Gibson, Mississippi; his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Tim Starnes of Cleveland, Mississippi; his grandchildren: Shelby Thrash and husband, Trace Thrash, Jacob Chastain, Aiden Walters, and his great-granddaughter, Noa K. Thrash.

Nelson was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Newlin Spencer; and his sisters, Jane Ellis and Vera Garrett.

After being diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2020, Nelson courageously managed its complications for several years. He has now laid aside the pain and limitations of his earthly body and entered into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior.

Visitation will be at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, Mississippi, on Friday, September 25, 2026, from 10:00 until 11:00 am. A Celebration of Life will begin at 11:00 am.
