Gordon Oates, Sr.

SERVICES: 11 AM THURSDAY, MARCH 31, 2011 AT OTT AND LEE FUNERAL HOME IN BRANDON.

ENTOMBMENT: LAKEWOOD MEMORIAL PARK

VISITATION: 4-7 PM WEDNESDAY AND 10 AM THURSDAY AT OTT AND LEE IN BRANDON.

Gordon Lee Oates, Sr., 83, passed away Monday, March 28, 2011 at his residence. Visitation is 4-7 pm Wednesday and 10 am Thursday at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Services are 11 am Thursday at the funeral home with entombment at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Mr. Oates was a native of Lisman, Alabama and a longtime resident of the Jackson area and was a member of Brandon Baptist Church. He was a strong leader in Broadmoor Baptist Church for many years. He helped guide the church in many financial decisions and taught Sunday School and was considered a pastors “best friend”. Mr. Oates was a graduate of the University of Alabama with a degree in accounting and was a retired real estate developer, broker and mortgage lender. Mr. Oates had served as past president of the Jackson Homebuilders Association and on the Board of Director of the National Homebuilders Association. He was a member of the Jackson Board of Realtors, past president of the Mortgage Lenders Association of Jackson and was a 32nd degree Mason.

Survivors include his daughter, Patricia O. Jones of Hattiesburg; son, Gordon Oates II of Palm Desert, California; grandchildren, Leslie Jones of Jackson, April Oates, Erin Schweitzer and Beth Oates of Dallas, TX; great grandson, Landon Carter Oates of Dallas, TX; sister-in-laws, Emma Williams of Brandon and Mary Oglukian of Charlotte, North Carolina.

His wife of 62 years, Raquel Oates and parents, Ira Joshua and Ora Lee Oates preceded him in death.

A special thank you goes out to the many caregivers, especially Dorothy Bell, Lisa Nelson and Sara White; the staff at Odyssey Hospice and especially Debra Willis.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund at Brandon Baptist Church, 100 Brandon Baptist Drive, Brandon, MS 39042.
