Glenda Joyce Thornton of Brandon, MS, went to Heaven on Sunday, February 2, 2025, from Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Mrs. Thornton was born in Runnelstown, Mississippi in September 1941, and was raised in Sharon and Sandersville, Mississippi. She was the daughter of the late John Timothy Purvis, Sr., and Esther Lillian Downing Purvis. Joyce was married to William Louis Thornton for 59 years and they resided in Vicksburg, Mississippi for 52 years.
Joyce proudly served as a nurse in Vicksburg for over 20 years, retiring in 2003. She was a firm believer in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was openly faithful to Him and to her church and family. She is known for her kind and gentle spirit, and for her friendly and loving personality. She was a longtime and active member of Oakland Baptist Church of Vicksburg for over 50 years. Louis and Joyce moved to Flowood, Mississippi in 2008, and were active members of Flowood Baptist Church.
Joyce is also preceded in death by her husband, Louis; a grandson, Quentin Ross Sanderson; and her brothers and sisters, Winnie Lou Purvis Stringer, Ina Mae Purvis Kennerly, James Wilson Purvis, Helen Purvis, John Timothy Purvis, Jr., Ruby Nell Purvis Rogers, Mildred Ruth Purvis, Ellen Maurine Purvis Harrison, Robert Dale Purvis, and one unnamed infant sister.
She is survived by her sons, William Kenneth (Ann) Thornton of Pine Bluff, AR, and Rodney Scott (Tammy) Thornton of Raymond, MS; and daughter, Kimberly Gail (Peter) Irby of Brandon, MS. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Craig Thornton, Jonathan Thornton, Derek Sanderson, Drew Sanderson, Ashley Irby, Janalyn Thornton, Sydney Thornton and Mrs. Amy Upton (DJ) Sanders; thirteen great-grandchildren, Nikki Thornton, Kendel Thornton, Ace Sanderson, Micah Thornton, Alaina Thornton, Marley Houston, Jace Shields, Paige Shields, Kade Shields, Abby Robertson, John Michael Robertson, Carsyn Sanders, Colton Sanders, and special friend, T. D. Easterling, as well as a host of dear and wonderful friends and relatives.
The family extends its thanks and deepest appreciation to the staff and members of Flowood Baptist Church, and to their many friends and relatives. Special thanks to the Jefferson Regional Medical Center of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and the Affinity Hospice of White Hall, Arkansas for their loving care during Joyce’s' illness.
Visitation will be held at Flowood Baptist Church, located at 1649 Old Fannin Rd, Flowood, MS 39232, on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 1-2 p. m. Funeral Services will be at the Flowood Baptist Church at 2 p. m. following the visitation. A graveside service and burial will take place at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery in Vicksburg.
