Evelyn Hilda (Morehead) Powers, 77, of Irondale, Alabama, passed away peacefully at her home on August 20, 2026, surrounded by her children.

Hilda was born to Martha Evelyn Vance and John Kenneth “J.K.” Morehead in Meridian, Mississippi, on October 14, 1948. She attended Mississippi College for Women and spent her early adult life caring for and teaching children with special needs. She was an avid tennis player in her youth and a lifelong gardening enthusiast.

Hilda was a dedicated member and past president of the Greenwood Garden Club in Greenwood, Mississippi, where she received numerous awards for her participation in flower shows. She loved spending time and vacationing with her family and grandchildren, whom she pampered at every opportunity. She was affectionately known as “Gogo” to her grandchildren. Full of life and always on the move, Gogo brought joy wherever she went.

Hilda was preceded in death by her twin brother, John Hilton Morehead, and her parents, John and Martha.

She is survived by her sister, Linda (Charles) Strong; her son, Pitch (Jessy) Powers, and their children, Swayze, Pitchford, Hilton, and Scout; and her daughter, Millie (Justin) Rutland, and their child, Evie.

A memorial gathering will be held on September 3, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Weidmann’s Restaurant located at 210 22nd Ave, Meridian, Mississippi 39301. A private family funeral service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (https://gbhs.org/donate) in honor of Hilda’s profound love for animals, or to the Greenwood Garden Club by mailing a check to P.O. Box 9331, Greenwood, Mississippi 38935.

Hilda’s love, kindness, and adventurous spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
