Edward Fortune, a veteran of the United States Army and Coast Guard, passed away surrounded by family on October 12,2025. Visitation will be held Friday, October 17 at Ott and Lee Funeral Home from 8:30-10:15am, with a funeral service in the chapel at 10:15am officiated by Bro. Gary Morris. Burial will take place at Mississippi Veteran’s Cemetery in Newton with burial honors provided by the United States Coast Guard.
Edward was born December 30, 1937 to Plez and Onie Fortune in Lena, Ms. He proudly served his country and later worked in several manufacturing plants, where he was known as a skilled and dependable mechanic. Edward continued working well into his later years and stayed on the job until he was 80.
Edward was a man of few words, but when he spoke, people listened. He had a dry sense of humor and could make others laugh without even trying.
Edward enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved to read, spent many peaceful days fishing, and always made time for his family. He stayed close with his grandkids, nieces, and nephews, keeping up with their lives and accomplishments.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Plez Everett Fortune and Onie Woods Fortune; two brothers, Woods Everett Fortune and James Curtis Fortune; a sister, Lexie Fortune Soloman; and his niece, Stacey Lynn Fortune.
Edward is survived by his children: Rebecca Montgomery (Terry) and Timothy Fortune; a sister: Robbie Fortune Putnam; grandchildren: John Kemp (Brandy) and Courtney Smith (Christian); great-grandchildren: Lucas Smith; Ryker, Braden, and Leah Smith; Benjamin, Cadence, and Aubree Kemp; nieces and nephews: Phillip and Steven Fortune, Roxie Fortune Sumrall, Jeff Putnam, Pennie Soloman Lee, Cindy Soloman Blankinchip, Ilydia Putnam Hall, Ennis-Ann Soloman Weeks, and John Soloman.
Serving as pallbearers will be the Mississippi Patriot Guard Riders.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Steven and Phillip Fortune, John Soloman, Jeff Putnam, Christian Smith, and John Kemp.
