Dorothy Ray McCommon

Dorothy Ray Cook McCommon, age 75, a resident of Brandon, MS, passed away on March 25, 2024, at the Brandon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and made her transition from her earthly home to her Heavenly home where she reunited with husband Jim.

Dorothy was born June 30, 1948, in Magnolia Arkansas, to Harris Ray Cook and Dorothy Mae Bailey Cook. Dorothy was married to James (Jim) McCommon and had made their home in Brandon for decades. Dorothy was a member of Brandon First Methodist Church in Brandon, MS where she enjoyed the support, love and fellowship of many friends and fellow members. She truly enjoyed being a member of the Earnie Walker Journey Sunday School Class and she and Jim enjoyed many outings and shared much love and fellowship with class members. Earlier, she and husband Jim, taught the 2–3-year-old Sunday School Class at Crossgates United Church for several years. She loved her family, church family, friends, neighbors and spending time with them brought great joy to her life. Dorothy enjoyed spending time at the old home place in Magnolia, Arkansas, where Jim built them a second home on the site of the original Cook homestead.  One of Dorothy’s “caring and sharing pass times”, was making computer generated cards and sending them out to family and friends for various occasions. In addition, Dorothy loved and cared for her numerous “feline” family members as well. Dorothy shared much love and affection with her nephew and niece, Jason and Allison, during their childhood years. Dorothy and Jim traveled about the country in their early marriage where she shared Jim’s love of fast and fancy cars. With every visit and encounter, she demonstrated great joy and happiness to all who visited her.

Dorothy retired from Entergy where she had been employed for years and developed many lifelong friends and acquaintances during this time.  She will be missed by all Entergy employees who knew and loved her.

Dorothy was preceded in death by husband Jim McCommon, parents, Dorothy Bailey Cook and Harris Ray Cook. Dorothy is survived by sister, Linda McManus (Bill), nephew, Dr. Jason (Jacqueline) McManus; niece, Allison McManus (Dr. Todd) Miller; great nephews, Luke McManus, Cooper and Griffin Miller and great nieces, Kate McManus, Sarah Morgan and Mary Alden Miller and a host of friends. Bill and Linda also wish to thank Caitlyn of Home Care Hospice for the compassionate, empathetic and professional care shown to Dorothy and family.
