Dorothy, lovingly known as Mim to her family, passed peacefully on June 18, 2022 at the age of 95. A resident of Brandon for over 50 years and recently residing at St. Catherine’s Village, she enjoyed a full life of teaching, raising her daughters and grandchildren, gardening, volunteering, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. Her days were filled with tending to her beloved pets, taking walks around her garden to admire her flowers, watching the stock markets and the Braves, and occasionally playing card games.
She was born in Philadelphia, MS, to Roy Arledge and Lillie Mae White along with two sisters, Louise and Elizabeth. She graduated from Mississippi State College for Women with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She took a teaching job in Lexington, MS, where she met her husband, Robert Allan Legate. They were happily married for 70 years during which time they adopted and lovingly raised two daughters, Gayle and Keleigh.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, her daughter, Gayle, and her great grandson, Chandler Lee Parker. She is survived by her daughter, Keleigh (Burke) Nichols, her grandchildren; Amber Legate, Justin (Hannah) Nichols, and Aaron (Max) Nichols; and three great grandchildren; Tommy Allan Parker, Ada Jane Nichols, and Hayden Burke Nichols.
Services will be held at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS, on Saturday, June 25, 2022. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM til 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM. Interment services will be held at Lakewood Memorial Park at 2:00 PM at The Pavilion.
