Alston Barrett Rhodes, Sr., age 78, passed away on December 11, 2025. Born on October 30, 1947, in Montgomery, Alabama, Barry lived a full life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and a deep love for the water.
Barry graduated from Butler High School in Butler, Alabama, where he proudly played football. He went on to attend Livingston University. A man of many talents and an entrepreneurial spirit, Barry spent his life building and running a variety of businesses, including hotels and restaurants. Earlier in his career, he was especially proud to be the owner of Rhodes Marine, a venture that reflected his lifelong passion for fishing and the outdoors.
Affectionately known by many names—Barry, Bear, Poppy, and Paka—he was a larger-than-life presence with a generous heart. An avid fisherman, he found his greatest peace on the water, often sharing those moments with family and friends, passing along stories, laughter, and lessons that will live on for generations.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert Neal Rhodes, Sr. and Ruth Barrett Rhodes; his brother, Gilbert Neal Rhodes, Jr.; his sisters, Jane Rhodes Talley, Freddie Rhodes White, and Donna Ruth Rhodes; and his beloved son, Wesley Tutt Rhodes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Angie Rhodes; his children, Alston Barrett Rhodes, Jr. (Linda), Michael Bradley Rhodes (Holly), Allyson Brittney Herrmann (Joseph), Stephanie LaShay Williamson (Lewis), Bradley Watson, and Matthew Chase Watson (Jodie). He was a devoted and proud grandfather to Emma Watson, Austin Girault, Rylan Saucier, Katelynn Girault, Tabytha Girault, Rowan Watson, Levi Herrmann, Charlee Ray Rhodes, Nolan Herrmann, Morgan Rhodes, Wesley Herrmann, and Anderson Rhodes.
A celebration of life service will be held at Fox Bay Clubhouse on Monday, December 15, 2025, at 4:00 p.m CST. Burial will take place on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at the Butler City Cemetery in Butler, Alabama, at 1:00 p.m CST.
Barry’s legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the waters he loved, and the countless lives he touched with his strength, kindness, and unwavering love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
