Agnes Marcell Lum Hawthorne, 92, a resident of Florence, MS, passed away on Resurrection Sunday, April 9, 2023 at Villa South Assisted Living in Florence, MS. Visitation will be held on Sun. April 16, 2023 from 2pm-5pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS. Funeral Services are 10am on Mon. April 17, 2023 at the Ott & Lee Funeral Home Chapel in Brandon, MS with burial to follow in the Florence Cemetery.
Mrs. Hawthorne was born in Branch, MS on June 19, 1931, to the late Morris G. Lum and Louise Kennedy Lum. She was a devout Christian. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Florence, MS. where she was an avid supporter of the church Youth Programs. Mrs. Hawthorne loved to travel and enjoyed going on mission trips, in which she was able to help build churches and parsonages. Mrs. Hawthorne was an active member of the Eastern Star where she held positions on the Regional, National and State levels and also served as Past Matron of O.E.C. Chapter No. 236 and was Past Queen of Daughters of the Nile in Jackson, MS.
Mrs. Hawthorne retired after 27 years of service with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. She began her career at MHP issuing licenses and worked her way up to the Administrative Offices. After retirement she worked for the MHP Retirement Association holding the position of Secretary/Treasurer. She also worked as a receptionist at the Mississippi State Capitol where she helped in any way possible while the Capitol was in session. Mrs. Hawthorne was a phenomenal seamstress and she made multiple coats and wedding dresses for family members. She enjoyed Gospel Music and loved to talk. It was said that she would talk to anyone and never met a stranger. Most of all, Mrs. Hawthorne loved her family very much and was very family oriented. She supported her family in everything they did.
Mrs. Hawthorne is survived by her two sons, Larry E. Hawthorne (Marla) and Kenneth L. Hawthorne (Elizabeth); five grandchildren, Michelle McWilliams, Nicole Holcom (Blake), T. J. McWilliams (Cindy), Jeremy Hawthorne, Savannah Hawthorne and numerous great grandchildren. Mrs. Hawthorne is also preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Hawthorne; daughter, Donna Faye McWilliams; grandson, Andy Ray Hawthorne and a brother, William “Buddy” Lum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mrs. Hawthorne’s memory to Gideons International at Ott and Lee Funeral Home, P. O. Box 1597 Brandon, MS 39043 or P.O. Box 2005 Woodward, OK 73802.
