Jeffery Woods

Jeffery Edward “Jay” Woods, 47, a resident of Pelahatchie, MS passed away Sunday, October 6, 2019 at University Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Funeral services will be held at 12 pm Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at Christ Congregational Church in Johns, MS with visitation just prior to the services beginning at 10 am.

Jay was born on April 7, 1972 in Jackson, MS. He was the son of Benny Neal Woods and Vetrice Winstead Woods. He was a member of Christ Congregational Church in Johns, MS. He was a 1991 graduate of Puckett Attendance Center. Jay was always willing to help kids and adults but especially kids who loved the rodeo. He was an expert horseman. He was a great all- around cowboy and won numerous awards in bull riding, roping, team roping and cutting. Jay was selected to the All American Mount Rushmore Rodeo Team. He competed in the National Finals all four years of high school. In 1988 Jay made the highest score in bull riding and it still stands today. Not only was Jay an amazing rodeo competitor, he was a one of a kind friend to so many. He loved like no one we have ever known. He was also a great friend to his aunt Sue. His contagious laugh and smile warmed any room he walked in. He will always be remembered as a “Mississippi Rodeo Legend”. Jay will be terribly missed by all of his family and friends.

Jay was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jeff and Myrtis Winstead and Dent and Belle Woods.

Jay is survived by his son, Cody Woods; father, Benny Woods; mother, Vetrice Winstead Woods; brother, Neal Woods, II; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
