Hazel Nevel Legate, 94 passed away peacefully, June 6th ,2022, at Castlewoods Place in Brandon, MS. She was born to Roy and Maude Nevel, May 12, 1928, in Quitman County, MS. She grew up in Tallahatchie County and attended school in Webb, MS. She attended Delta State Teachers College, Delta State University receiving her B.S. in Education in 1950.
She began her teaching and coaching career in Lexington, MS where she met and was married for 66 years to Claude Ellison Legate before his passing. She continued her teaching career in Oxford and with the Jackson Public Schools for over 35 years. Her summers were filled with fishing, gardening, and youth sports. She was an active member of Epworth Methodist Church until its closing before becoming a faithful member of First Independent Church in Madison. After retirement she volunteered with the VA Medical Center and American Legion auxiliary.
She is survived by her children, Dennis (Melissa) Legate of Brandon, Claudia Johnson of Madison, Carl (Liz) Legate of Brandon, three grandchildren, Christian (Shawn) Funderburk of Rosharon, Texas, Graham (Ashley)Legate of Brandon, and Jessica Higdon of Madison, and three great granddaughters, London, Emma and Allie Legate of Brandon.
A memorial Service will take place at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS at 11;00a.m., with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. on June 18th, 2022.
