Betty Joyce Bates Crapps

Leesburg, MS

Mrs. Betty Crapps, age 92, a resident of the Leesburg Community passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at Mississippi Care Center in Morton.  Visitation will be held 11am-1:45pm Saturday, October 5, 2019 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton.  Services will be held 2pm Saturday at the Ott & Lee Chapel in Morton with burial in Leesburg Baptist Church Cemetery.  No Graveside service will be held.  Rev. Jerry File Sr. will officate the services.  Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Morton.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Willie Ray Crapps; parents, L.S. Bates and Dorothy  Agnes Holmes Bates; son, Billy Max Crapps; sibling, Lucille Owen; son-in-law, Gary Thrash and grandson, Lee Thrash.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Thrash of Leesburg; sister, Dolly Merchant of Pelahatchie; granddaughter, Angela Boyd (Andy); 2 great grandchildren, Anslee and Aiden Boyd; and a host of friends.

On Aug. 18, 1927 a little red haired girl was born to Jack and Agnes Bates.  From stories told, this little freckled face child could hold her own-always seeming to have a mind of her own.

Once, Mama Agnes was going to make her a new dress, and Betty cried and cried because she thought the little girl on the front of the pattern was ugly.

Her childhood consisted of happy care-free days as she and the other children of the community ripped, romped and played their heart out.  She married, Willie Ray Crapps when she was 15 years old.  And often remarked that she couldn’t believe that she got married at such a young age.  It proved to be a good marriage; Wilie Ray always wanted to please her.  Not having graduated from high school , she later went on to get her GED.

After Willie Ray came home from the war, they started their family.  Brenda was the first born and 5 years later a beautiful healthy baby boy, Billy Max made his appearance.  At 8 months of age, Billy contracted the dreaded disease of polio and the sadness was heavy that hovered over the family.

Betty Joyce was a very busy woman.  She always had meals prepared, clothes were sewn, house was immaculate, yard and garden tended, attended her daughters basketball games, attended church and she even helped in their old country store.  (Talk about the Prov. 31 Woman!)

A favorite family memory was when her husband would give her $100.00 each year for Christmas spending.  The first thing she did was give $10.00 to Lottie Moon and the rest was spent wisely on a wonderful Christmas for her family.  Mrs. Betty was always a lady of beauty, grace and dignity and she spent her last breaths with those same qualities-much due to the wonderful loving care she received from Elsie and the staff at Ms Care Center of Morton.

Memorials may be made in her honor to Leesburg Baptist Church.
