Velma Annice Stevens, of Brandon, Mississippi, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at the age of 90.
Velma was born on October 21, 1935, in Braxton, Mississippi, to David Kline and Ina Stevens Kline. She grew up in the Johns Community and attended Puckett Schools, where she played basketball. On November 22, 1956, she married Rufus Lee Stevens. Velma’s love for her family shone in her commitment as a wife, homemaker, and mother.
She was a member of Alta Woods Baptist Church in Jackson, where she served her church family by providing delicious meals for families experiencing illness and loss. She was also a caregiver for many. She enjoyed sewing in her younger years, and after Rufus’ retirement, they found joy in traveling together. Velma also loved plants and was blessed with a green thumb.
She is preceded in death by her parents, David and Ina Kline; husband, Rufus Stevens; and her sisters, Ruby Patrick, Beatrice Boone, Jimmie Carlson, Jean Burnham, and Bobbie Kennedy.
Survivors include her daughter, Terri Smith (David); grandchildren, Amber Carter (Chris) and Blair Tew (Tisha); great grandchildren, Isaac and Andre Taylor, London Tew, and Kammy Hamm; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon on Monday, April 6, 2026, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm with the funeral service beginning at 2:00 pm in the chapel. Mrs. Stevens will be laid to rest in Johns Cemetery. There will be no graveside service.
