Joyce Windham Jones Shorter, age 91, passed away on September 30, leaving behind a loving family and a lifetime of cherished memories. She was born in Crystal Springs, Mississippi, on October 19, 1934, to the late Oliver Windham and Carrie Sykes Windham. Joyce was a devoted mother of five children, a proud grandmother and great-grandmother, and a woman whose curiosity and love of history led her on many adventures.
Her family was her greatest legacy. Joyce is survived by her children, Wanda Jones Carter (Dale), Vicki Jones Netterville, Susan Jones McLeod (Norman), Joyce Jones Ferris (Eugene), and Chuck Jones (Pam); eleven grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren, who will carry her memory in their hearts. She is also survived by her brother, Phillip Rogers (Brenda); her sister, Phyllis Greer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
While working in the computer lab at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Joyce discovered a love of research that became a lifelong passion. She put the skills she learned there to good use, traveling extensively throughout the southeastern United States and even to England to follow leads and verify her findings. Her dedication to uncovering history and tracing connections led to her active involvement in numerous genealogical organizations, where she shared her interests and helped preserve family histories for future generations.
Joyce’s determination, adventurous spirit, and love of discovery were important parts of who she was. Her travels and research reflected her deep appreciation for the past and for the stories that connect families across generations.
During the final three years of her life, Joyce resided at Vicksburg Convalescent Center. Her family is grateful for the care and compassion she received during that time.
Joyce will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who knew and loved her. Though her family grieves her passing, they find comfort and peace in knowing that she is now resting in the loving arms of Jesus.
Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her love will live on through the generations she leaves behind.
The visitation and service will be held at Ott and Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, Mississippi on Saturday, October 24, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon, with the service immediately following. Burial will be at Lakewood South Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to an organization of your choice.
