Obituary

Ida Mae Comfort Chaffin, of Richland, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026, at the age of 85. Born in Smith County on July 30, 1941, Ida Mae lived a full and faithful life that touched everyone lucky enough to know her.

Ida Mae had a determined spirit, and later in life she returned to college as an adult to become a registered nurse. She went on to work as an intensive care nurse at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, a job that called for both skill and a tender heart, and she had plenty of both. In time she also worked alongside her husband, Dr. Arlon Chaffin, as a nurse in his chiropractic practice in Morton.

Together, Ida Mae and Arlon eventually moved to Auburndale, Florida, where they made the most of their days. She spent many happy hours with friends and family having the time of her life at Disney World and Busch Gardens, always ready for the next adventure. After Arlon passed away, she returned home to Mississippi to be near her children and grandchildren, where she belonged.

A devout Christian, Ida Mae found great joy in her faith and in the music that celebrated it. She dearly loved Gaither concerts and treasured seeing the Booth Brothers and David Phelps perform. At home, she filled her time playing the piano and losing herself in a good book, with Christian music never far away.

Ida Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Arlon Chaffin; her parents, Willie Harvey Comfort and Thelma Presley Comfort; her sisters, Mary Wall and Betty Crum; and her brother, Harvey Thomas Comfort.

She leaves behind her daughter, Donna Lee Harrell Harris (Richard); her son, Michael Floyd Harrell (Samantha); her grandchildren, Kristopher Harris (Alicia), Heather Harris Knighton (Randy), and William Harrell; her great grandchildren, Katelyn Harris, Kadee Knighton Templeton (Matthew), Raiden Knighton, and Logan Harris; and her great-great granddaughter, Portlynn Templeton.

A graveside service will be held at Ludlow Cemetery on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Serving as pallbearers are Kristopher Harris, Randy Knighton, Raiden Knighton, Logan Harris, Matthew Templeton, and Richard Prestage.

Now reunited with her beloved Arlon and resting in the arms of her Savior, Ida Mae leaves a legacy of faith, love, and joyful music that will echo in the hearts of her family for generations.
