Dewey Ray Wise, 87, passed away on July 28, 2026, after a life marked by faithful service, lifelong learning, and a deep love for his family. Born on November 1, 1938, in Haleyville, Alabama, Dewey lived a life of purpose, embracing each chapter with determination, curiosity, and unwavering faith.

In 1957, Dewey was drafted into the United States Army. His military service took him to Germany, where he experienced international travel for the first time, broadening his perspective and beginning a lifetime of adventure. Following his Army service, he worked as a radio announcer, using his clear voice and love of communication in a profession he enjoyed.

In 1961, Dewey enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served honorably for more than 20 years. His assignments included Berlin, Germany; Texas; Oklahoma; New Hampshire; and finally Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, where he retired from military service.

Retirement from the Air Force marked the beginning of a second career devoted to education. Dewey earned a bachelor’s and master's degree from William Carey College and later completed a doctorate at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He then joined the faculty of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College's Harrison County Campus, where he taught for 20 years. As an educator, he inspired and encouraged countless students, sharing not only his knowledge but also the wisdom gained through a lifetime of service.

Never content to stop working, Dewey embarked on a third career after retiring from teaching. Returning to his childhood roots, he established a hobby U-pick berry farm in Smith County, Mississippi. There he found great joy in cultivating the land, welcoming visitors, and sharing the simple rewards of country life.

Above all, Dewey was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great friend. He shared 65 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife. His greatest pride was his family, and he cherished every opportunity to spend time with them, encourage them, and celebrate their accomplishments.

He is survived by his wife Robbie Wise; his son, Michael Wise, and daughter-in-law, Susan Wise; his daughter, Deborah Oakley, and son-in-law, Nathan Oakley; and his son-in-law, Cliff Taylor. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Clifton Taylor (Lindsey), Matthew Wise (Ashley), Evelyn Taylor Gawel (Travis), Jacob Wise (Christina), Sanders Oakley, Wynn Oakley, Rebekah Oakley, and Harris Oakley.

He was preceded in death by his cherished daughter, Charlotte Taylor, and his beloved grandson, Lathem Oakley.

Dewey will be remembered as a man of integrity, faith, and quiet strength. Whether serving his country in uniform, shaping the lives of students in the classroom, or tending the berry farm, he approached every endeavor with dedication and grace.

His life was a testament to the value of service, education, perseverance, and love—a life well lived and a legacy that will endure for generations.

Visitation will be held at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon on August 1 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Ott & Lee. Steve Mayes and John Vaughn will officiate the service.

Pallbearers will be Clifton Taylor, Matthew Wise, Jacob Wise, Sanders Oakley, Wynn Oakley, Harris Oakley, and Travis Gawel.
