Obituary

Betty Jean Alford, born on May 12, 1937, in Mississippi, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, in Jackson, Mississippi. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was filled with love, creativity, and dedication.

Betty Jean was known for her many talents and interests. She loved woodworking and was very crafty. Sewing was another pastime she cherished, and she took great joy in decorating the Christmas tree for Oschner Scott Regional, bringing festive cheer to those around her. She also loved to go shopping and spending time with her family, always finding happiness in their company. Her affection extended to her animals, the outdoors, and she had a deep passion for working, which filled her days with purpose.

She is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Samuel Jackson "SJ" Alford; her children, Marsha Jones, Chris Ashmoore, and Shane Ashmoore; her grandchildren Anthony Ashmoore, Landon Waggoner, and Dustin Waggoner; and her great-grandchildren Atley Ashmoore, Bre'Adeline Waggoner, and Shaiynie Waggoner. Betty Jean’s family meant the world to her and she treasured every moment spent with them.

Betty Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Cap Jefferson Barret and Eula Beatrice Barret; her sons, James Ellmus Ashmoore Jr. and Anthony Craig Ashmoore; and numerous brothers and sisters.

A visitation will be held on June 5, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM at Ott & Lee Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be conducted at the same location from 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Morton Memorial Gardens in Morton, MS.
