Albert "Ross" Winstead, born on April 22, 1939, in Simpson County, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2026, in Florence, Mississippi. He grew up in the Cato community and moved to Star when he married Mary Rankin in 1974. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose life was marked by his unwavering faith and commitment to service.
Ross dedicated over 25 years of his career to Maintenance with General Electric, showcasing a remarkable work ethic that earned him the respect of his colleagues and community. He also proudly served his country in the Army for six years, embodying the values of duty and service that guided him throughout his life.
A faithful member of Star Baptist Church, Ross was known for his dedication to his faith and the church community, where he loved working in the Star Mission Room at the church. He also enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, which was a reflection of his nurturing spirit. His love for nature and the simple joys of life resonated with all who knew him.
Ross is survived by his beloved daughters, Selina Rayner (Dwayne) and Tanya Watts (Ronnie), as well as his siblings: Jean Brown, J.K. Winstead (Linda), and Phillip Winstead. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren: Hunter Watts (Kimberly), Nathan Rayner (Brittany), and Dylan Rayner (Taylor). Ross was also a proud great-grandfather to Sylvie Rae Watts, Tripp Watts, Michael Shipp, Guage Shipp, and Preston Rayner, and a great-great-grandfather to Kaylib Shipp. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Kade Winstead and Lydia Mae Anderson, his loving wife, Mary Rankin Winstead, and his siblings, Billie Jo Chapman and Virginia Ann Smith.
Ross’s legacy will be celebrated at Star Baptist Church in Star, Mississippi, where visitation will take place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest in Star Cemetery. He will be remembered for his kindness, devotion, and the significant impact he had on those around him. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
